Strategies to Help Manage Alzheimer Disease
Caregivers and individuals with AD may find the following management strategies helpful:
- Attitude
- Maintain an open mind and positive attitude - focus on “what you can do.”
- Accept that there are many ways to continue a meaningful and productive life.
- Continue to explore ways to fulfill needs for intimacy and closeness.
- Healthy Diet and Exercise
- Exercise improves physical health and co-ordination, and reduces stress and frustration. Speak to your doctor to develop an exercise program that best suits your needs and goals.
- Ensure that your diet is healthy and balanced. For more information, speak to your dietitian.
- Information and Support
- Educate yourself about the disease and research resources in your local community. Consult many sources of information—for example, your physician, the local Alzheimer Society, the Internet and the library.
- Keep track of all the information you gather. Whenever you contact an agency, a support group or a healthcare professional, be sure to write down the name of the person you speak to, and a brief note about what the person tells you.
- Meet with other family members to assess the situation and develop a short-range plan of action. Assign tasks to family members, such as grocery shopping, doctor appointments, or driving. Be patient with those who are not yet emotionally ready to offer help.
- Memory aid tips include the following suggestions:
- Write out instructions.
- Label drawers, cupboards, and closet doors to identify contents.
- Write upcoming activities on a calendar and mark off days.
- Ask a friend to remind you of important events/appointments.
