Sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucosal lining of the sinuses. Sinusitis is also characterized by infection caused by the invasion of bacterial, viral or fungal pathogens into one or more of the sinus cavities.

Sinusitis is a common and costly illness that has a significant effect on quality of life for many individuals. By various estimates, the number of physician visits for all cases of sinusitis is 1 to 2 million annually, and increasing steadily. The number of actual cases of sinusitis may be much higher since some cases may spontaneously resolve, and some cases may go unreported because other conditions that coexist with sinusitis, such as asthma, allergies or bronchitis are considered the primary condition. Although some cases of sinusitis are self-resolving and it is not necessary to consult a physician, more than 90% of those patients who do consult physicians are prescribed medication. It is estimated that 15% of the population will experience sinusitis.
